Curation & Audience

Seven months ago I had never heard the word curation.  I knew a curator worked in a museum, but that was the extent of my knowledge or interest in the word until I entered the IT&DML graduate program at UNH.
Now I have a collection of curations on a variety of topics, and I have enjoyed the process.  One tool I really like and have already shared with other teachers is Storify.  Storify enables a student to research online and embed the source into their work.  It is a great way to teach students how to use the internet properly for research, to assess the information and source and not get penalized for plagiarism.

For ED722 Distant Learning, Trends, Issues and Practices, I created a Storify each week:

Another tool I really liked form this semester is Haiku Deck: http://www.haikudeck.com/
I was able to create visually appealing, simple presentations with this app. It is very user friendly, though somewhat limited.  Advise from the creator was to embed the Haiku Deck into a PowerPoint presentation, which I felt defeated the purpose.  I altered my work to fit the parameters of Haiku Deck because I liked it so much.

If you watch these two presentations you can see they are very different in scope. I utilized Hiaku Deck as a poetry slideshow, then used it as a slide presentation I recorded over for an instructional video for teachers on what PBS has to offer for their classrooms in all grades, Early Childhood through High School.

I have used these tools for a variety of audiences as I have submitted my work online for the DLMOOC, to my professors at UNH; and have posted them on twitter and Facebook for other educators to view and hopefully like and use the tools and information. Both of these tools would be excellent at all grade levels. K-Higher Ed.
