Joseph Depalma and I are creating a unit of study for early childhood grades pre-k - 1st grade, implementing UBD and UDL and concepts of deeper learning. Students will study homes in their community, observe and describe their own home, homes in their community and learn about homes of other people around the world. Our final unit will be based on both Common Core Standards and the CTELDS. We have outlined our goals, objectives and progress below:
HOMES - Planning Unit for Pre-K through 1st Grades
Goals:
1) Students will learn about different homes in their community and how they are similar and different; then learn about and compare their homes to homes around the world.
2 )Pre-K Students will be able to draw a representation of their own home, create their home using wooden blocks; collaborate to create a community of homes.
Technology Connection: students will use ipad to draw a representation of their home.using app: WhiteBoard Lite; http://ldd.lego.com/en-us/download, Google/Lego: https://www.buildwithchrome.com/ or googlemaps.com

3) Kindergarten and Grade 1 students will be able to draw a digital or paper representation of a specific home style, build a house structure with features similar to homes that they have learned about, and then use digital tool to create a digital model.
4) Discussion and Share: Each student will share verbally or in writing about their home and project.
Student Learning Objectives,
1. Work in a small group to build a community out of wooden blocks, duplo blocks, legos (as developmentally appropriate for age group.)
2. Use 3-D model students built to create a virtual community with Duplo: http://ldd.lego.com/en-us/download, Google/Lego: https://www.buildwithchrome.com/ or
3. Identify where the house they created might be found and what features on the house show that. (Age appropriate answers)
Performance task:
1. Students will apply their understanding by building a home out of legos, duplos, or legos.
2. Students should be able to explain about the features of their home (written or verbally) and how the environment/weather plays a factor in home design.
3. Students should be able to create a virtual home on 1 of the outlined platforms.
Essential Questions:.
“Where do you live? Are all houses the same? What are some different types of houses?”
“Do you think the weather makes us build our houses in a certain way? How?
Why do you think some houses are built differently than others?
What are some things that a person building a house has to think about?
Progress:
We have completed a UBD Master Lesson Plan Template for “Homes” Unit.
We will develop graphic organizers for KWL, comparison (VENN Diagram)
Create tutorials for digital materials.
